🌾 Sangke Grassland: Gannan’s Highland Haven of Culture and Nature

Located just 18 km southwest of Xiahe County, Sangke Grassland (桑科草原) is a vast alpine meadow that stretches across 70 square kilometers at an elevation of over 3,000 meters. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and dotted with wildflowers, this serene landscape is a gateway to Tibetan nomadic life and spiritual traditions.

📜 History & Cultural Significance

Sangke Grassland has long served as a primary livestock base for the region and holds deep cultural roots in Tibetan history. It’s said that King Gesar, the legendary Tibetan hero, held smoke offering ceremonies and horse races here to establish his kingship. The name “Sangke” derives from the Tibetan word for smoke offering—“Sanghuo”

Today, the grassland remains home to over 4,000 herders who maintain traditional lifestyles. Visitors can experience authentic Tibetan hospitality, including yak butter tea, tsampa, and bonfire parties in seasonal tent camps
