The Genocide Memorial, erected in 1967 on Tsitsernakaberd Hill in western Yerevan, is a place to mourn the approximately 1.5 million Armenians who were killed in the Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1923. A spire about 44 meters high rises at the top of the hill, and 12 slanted stone pillars symbolize the 12 provinces that were massacred, with an "immortal flame" burning in the center  .
