Guangxiao Temple (Meifeng Temple, Meifeng Guangxiao Temple) is located in the middle section of Shengli Road, Chengxiang District, Putian City, Fujian Province. In 1983, it was listed as a national key Buddhist temple in the Han area by the State Council.
Meifeng Guangxiao Temple is located in the middle section of Shengli Road in the urban area. Because plum trees covered the mountain during the Song Dynasty, Emperor Huizong bestowed the name "Meifeng Temple" with the inscription "Plum Forest Buddhist Kingdom." The temple was originally a Guanyin Pavilion. In the eighth year of the Yuanfeng reign of the Song Dynasty (1085), Huang, the mother of the local scholar Li Fu, donated over 100 mu of land to expand the pavilion into a temple. In the seventh year of the Shaoxing reign (1137), it was renamed "Bao'en Guangxiao Temple." During the Yuan Dynasty, official lectures were held within the temple. In the 41st year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1562), Japanese pirates invaded Putian, and the temple was burned down. It was rebuilt during the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty. During the Qing Dynasty, over a dozen large and small halls were added, forming a staggered and orderly formation along the mountainside.
Along the central axis of Meifeng Guangxiao Temple, six halls are arranged in order: the Mountain Gate Archway, the Heavenly King Hall, the Worship Pavilion, the Main Hall, the Dharma Hall (with the Sutra Library above), and the Great Compassion Hall. To the left are the Garan Hall, the Bell Tower, the Guest Hall, the Dining Hall, the Monk's Quarters, and the Hall of Merit; to the right are the Patriarch's Hall, the Drum Tower, the Pure Karma Hall, the Meditation Hall, and the Abbot's Chambers. The entire complex rises gradually, nestled against the mountainside. Guangxiao Temple's architecture is simple and elegant, majestic and imposing, with a clear layout of primary and secondary elements and a well-organized layout. The total building area spans 18,000 square meters, and the entire temple grounds encompass 53,000 square meters.
Subtropical monsoon climate; Meifeng Temple was built in the late Northern Song Dynasty and is one of the "Four Great Monasteries" in Putian. It is suitable for travel in all seasons.
