The Yellow River National Geological Museum, located within the Yellow River Geopark in Zhengzhou, has a main building area of 5,829.3 square meters. Construction began in June 2007 and was completed and opened to the public in April 2009. The museum is a comprehensive geological museum integrating popular science education, scientific research, specimen collection, and entertainment.
At present, the museum has a collection of nearly eighty specimens, mainly rare minerals such as pyrite, antimony ore, malachite and more than twenty other geological minerals with scientific research significance; there are also loess specimens such as paleosol, coarse clay calcareous nodules and other sixteen types of loess classifications; and a collection of nearly forty kinds of ethnic costumes with the characteristics of the Central Plains region.
The exhibition, themed around the Yellow River, loess, and Yellow River culture, uses high-tech techniques to illustrate the formation and evolution of the Yellow River, loess, the Loess Plateau, and the Huanghuai Plain. Using sound, light, and electrical technology, gusts of wind howled across the yellow sky, followed by a gloomy sky and a thick, dusty fog, giving visitors a sense of being there. Passing through a "time tunnel" to a "primitive ecological park," Zhengzhou, during the Quaternary period, enjoyed a subtropical climate, showcasing towering saber-toothed elephants and large-lipped rhinoceroses.
The temperate monsoon climate makes it suitable for travel in all four seasons.
The Zhengzhou Yellow River Geological Museum has an exhibition area of more than 4,000 square meters, including the Loess Hall, Yellow River Hall, Huanghuai Exhibition Hall, VIP Reception Hall, Sightseeing Elevator Hall and Multimedia Hall, Ecological Garden, Dahe Square, etc.
