Introducing Nanwan Lake Scenic Area

Nanwan Lake, located southwest of Xinyang City, is known as the "Pearl of Southern Henan." Its vast expanse is over ten times the size of West Lake in Hangzhou. Standing at the lake's edge, one can gaze upon the vast expanse of misty waters, where the water merges with the sky. Nanwan Lake, comprised of Nanwan Lake and Nanwan National Forest Park, boasts crystal-clear waters tinged with green. The islands within the lake are lushly forested, with dozens of islands scattered throughout, including Bird Island, Monkey Island, and Summer Island. The lush vegetation and fresh air surrounding Nanwan Lake make it an ideal destination for a relaxing vacation.

Visitors can stroll along the lakeside and enjoy the fresh air brought by nature. Hiking enthusiasts can explore the nearby forests, listen to the birdsong and cicadas, and feel the comfort of a green oxygen bar. Alternatively, they can go boating on the lake, visit Monkey Island, Tea Island, and Bird Island, and take in the surrounding scenery.

Monkey Island, nestled in the middle of Nanwan Lake, north of Xiaoxia Island and Baiguoyuan Peninsula, is lushly planted and named after the monkey population that inhabits it. The island's monkey population is small, and most are kept free-range, allowing visitors to witness the animals in all their adorable poses.

The famous Xinyang Maojian tea is grown on the island. As early as the Tang Dynasty, Xinyang Maojian was offered as tribute tea to the imperial court. Every spring, tea picking and frying activities, as well as tea art performances, can be seen on the island.

In addition to the native birds, Bird Island welcomes over 20 migratory bird species each spring and summer, numbering as many as 100,000. Egrets are the most prominent, while in winter, cormorants (commonly known as ospreys) dominate the island. The most magical and exciting performances are at the Bird Art Theater, where the birds perform over 20 different acts, including riding cars, bowling, doing arithmetic, dancing, and even catching banknotes.

Climate and best time to travel

The climate is transitioning from a subtropical monsoon to a warm temperate zone. March to August is the best time to visit. In spring, the azaleas on the islands of Nanwan Lake are as fragrant as orchids. You can pick tea leaves, watch tea making and tea art performances, and buy authentic Xinyang Maojian tea.
