The Xuchang Guandi Temple, located in Baling Park at No. 7, West Section of Xuji Avenue, Xuchang City, Henan Province, is one of the eight major Guandi temples in China. In May 2013, it was included in the seventh batch of national key cultural relics protection units by the State Council.
This temple, built in 1689 (the 28th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty), commemorates Guan Yu's act of carrying his robe at Ba Ling Bridge. Donations from mourners and local residents, along with funding from state officials, commemorated the event. The temple's artifacts demonstrate the profound reverence for Guan Yu's ethos of loyalty, righteousness, benevolence, and courage. The co-veneration of Guan Yu and Cao Cao within the main hall is a unique cultural phenomenon.
The existing ancient building complex covers an area of 11,026 square meters. The main buildings along the central axis include the mountain gate, ceremonial gate, curved roof, main hall, and Spring and Autumn Pavilion. Flanking the central axis are the bell tower, drum tower, east and west side halls, and east and west wing rooms, forming a three-courtyard, nine halls, and one pavilion architectural layout. The entire complex is rigorous and complete, with a solemn and elegant atmosphere. The Guandi Temple currently houses over 50 steles from the Ming and Qing dynasties, providing valuable historical materials for the study of the Three Kingdoms culture.
It has a temperate monsoon climate and was listed as a Henan Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit by the Henan Provincial Government on September 25, 2000. It is suitable for travel in all seasons.
The courtyard includes a mountain gate, bell and drum tower, main hall, side chambers, and a Taoist temple. Statues of Guan Yu, Cao Cao, and his second wife are also found there. The uniqueness of the Guandi Temple lies in the fact that Cao Cao and Guan Yu share incense offerings within the temple, creating the unique scene of "all Guandi Temples in the world deify Cao, but the Xuchang Temple alone dedicates him to Cao." It is a great place for a day trip.
It is recommended to play for about 2 hours.
