Xuchang Chunqiulou Square is located in the middle section of Jianshe Road, south of Chunqiulou, in Weidu District, Xuchang City, Henan Province. Historically, it has been known as Guan Gong's Residence, Wu'an Wang Temple, Guanwang Temple, "Liangyuan Yingfeng" Temple, Guan Fuzi Temple, and Guandi Temple. A complex of ancient buildings in the style of the Ming and Qing dynasties, it is a key cultural relic protection unit in Henan Province and a national 3A-level tourist attraction.
In the fifth year of Jian'an in the Eastern Han Dynasty (200 AD), Cao Cao launched an eastern expedition and captured Guan Yu and Liu Bei's wives, Gan and Mi, at the Battle of Xiapi. To protect his wives, Guan Yu temporarily surrendered to Cao Cao after the "Three Treaties at Tushan" and traveled to Xuchang. Cao Cao, a man who valued his talents and loved his generals, appointed Guan Yu a lieutenant general and granted him a mansion for him and his two wives to live in. To avoid suspicion, he divided the house into two courtyards, assigning the two wives to the inner courtyard and himself to the outer courtyard. In the courtyard, there was a building where Guan Yu would read the Spring and Autumn Annals by candlelight, earning the name "Spring and Autumn Tower."
The existing Chunqiu Tower ancient architectural complex was first constructed during the Yuan Dynasty (1114-1180) and underwent numerous renovations throughout the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. It forms a basic "one house, two courtyards" layout. The outer courtyard's central axis features the mountain gate, Chunqiu Tower, and Guan Sheng Temple, each characterized by its distinctive single-, double-, and triple-eaved architecture. The inner courtyard boasts a staggered arrangement of pavilions, terraces, towers, and pavilions. Adjacent to the Temple of Confucius to the west, the co-enshrinement of the two sages, Wen and Wu, is a rare sight in China. The Guan Sheng Temple, the scenic area's main structure, stands at 33 meters, and its 15-meter-tall statue of Guan Gong is a truly remarkable sight. Today, the Chunqiu Tower scenic area is a growing destination for both domestic and international visitors seeking to visit and worship Guan Gong.
