The Luliang Colorful Sand Forest, a National AAAA-level tourist attraction located 18 kilometers from Luliang County, boasts 108 designated scenic spots scattered throughout a Y-shaped canyon, covering a total area of 180 hectares. The scenic area is primarily known for its natural sand columns and peaks. Along with the Lunan Stone Forest and the Yuanmou Earth Forest, the Luliang Colorful Sand Forest is known as one of the "Three Forests of Yunnan." However, it's less famous than the Lunan Stone Forest and is less visited, making it a quiet spot for scenic enjoyment.
Luliang's colorful sand forest is formed from weathered mineral-laden sandstone. A closer look reveals that the sand forest changes color with the sunlight, with shades of red, white, yellow, gray, and black, creating a truly captivating photo experience. The layered effect is especially pronounced in the evening, when the setting sun creates a more pronounced effect.
After exploring the sand forest, head to the sand sculpture area, where a collection of sand sculptures from past international sand sculpture competitions is on display. These include Snow White, The Old Man and the Sea, The Tale of Genji, and How the Steel Was Tempered. Walking among these giant sand figures and castles makes you feel like you've arrived from Lilliput, and many visitors take photos here.
