The ancient city of Hancheng , bordered by the Yushui River to the south, Liangshan Mountain to the west, and the plateau to the northeast, is surrounded by mountains and rivers. With a history of 1,500 years, it is one of the most well-preserved ancient cities in China. It retains structures from the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, including 16 structures from the Yuan Dynasty. Hancheng boasts one of the highest concentrations of Yuan Dynasty buildings in China.
The main street of the ancient city, running north and south, is shaped like a dragon, stretching a thousand meters long and slightly curving. The Jin Dynasty pagoda atop Yuanjue Temple, rising in the north, resembles a dragon's head rising high, while the ancient stone bridge at the south end sways like a dragon's tail. On either side of the dragon-shaped main street and along the four gates, a network of 72 alleyways, large and small, crisscross and connect in all directions .
Among the well-preserved clusters of quadrangle courtyard dwellings in the ancient city are Zhang Alley, Gaojia Alley, Bozi Alley, Nanyingmiao Alley, and Wanwan Alley. Thirteen protected historic buildings, numbering over 70 in number and diversity, are located in the neighborhood. The Confucian Temple, City God Temple, and Dongying Temple, in particular, are connected in a stretch of over 700 meters, a distinctive feature of the ancient city.
The ancient city has many historical sites and cultural landscapes, including the Confucian Temple, Jiulang Temple, Hancheng Beiying Temple, Dongying Temple, Qingshan Temple, Yuxiu Bridge, City God Temple, County Government Office, Zhuangyuan Mansion, King Chuang's Palace, Jincheng Old Street, former residences of celebrities, and courtyard houses.
