Las Vegas with kids

We are planning a return trip to Vegas at the end of March. I have a few things I'm looking for suggestions on:

1. Best kid-friendly hotel near the south end of the strip (Thinking NyNy?)

2. We are not a big hiking/outdoorsy family but would like to drive out to the Grand Canyon. I'm thinking we first stop at Hoover Dam and then proceed to the WEST RIM of the GC. I have read this is no where near as impressive as the South Rim, but my boys (10 and 7) will not really be wow'd either way I'm sure. I'd rather save the extra 2 hours of drive time and see the Skywalk....unless the south rim is THAT MUCH more magical???

3. What are some must see shows on the strip for families? Thinking MJ One?? We saw Jabowakeez and my boys LOVED it.

4. Any other MUST see attractions on or off the strip?

Thank you all in advance!! :D

It sounds like you have an exciting trip planned! Las Vegas offers a lot of family-friendly activities, and I’m happy to help you with suggestions. Here’s a detailed answer to your questions:

1. Best kid-friendly hotel near the south end of the strip:

Yes, New York-New York (NYNY) is a great choice for families, especially with young kids. It’s located near the south end of the Strip and offers fun attractions like the Roller Coaster and arcade games, which your boys might enjoy. Additionally, they have family-friendly dining options, and the location is convenient for walking to other attractions like MGM Grand and Excalibur. Some other kid-friendly hotel options include:

  • Excalibur: Known for its castle theme, it’s very fun for kids with a large arcade and pool area. It’s also on the south end of the Strip.
  • Luxor: The pyramid design makes it visually striking for kids, and they have an IMAX theater and exhibits like the Titanic Artifact Exhibition.
  • Mandalay Bay: Great pool complex with a lazy river, shark reef aquarium, and many family-friendly activities. It’s a bit farther south but still near the action.

2. Grand Canyon Trip: Hoover Dam and West Rim vs South Rim:

The drive to the Grand Canyon is a significant part of the trip, and it’s understandable that you’d like to save time. The West Rim, where the Skywalk is located, is closer to Las Vegas (about 2.5 hours one way) compared to the South Rim (about 4-5 hours one way). The West Rim offers the Skywalk, which is a glass bridge over the canyon, giving you a thrilling view and photo opportunities, but as you mentioned, the views are less expansive than the South Rim.

  • West Rim: The drive is easier, and the Skywalk is a unique experience, but the views and overall experience might not feel as majestic.
  • South Rim: This is the iconic Grand Canyon experience with breathtaking views and more hiking opportunities. If you have the time and want to get the full “wow” factor, the South Rim is the more spectacular option. It may be worth it for a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

If you’re pressed for time and your kids are okay with less hiking, the West Rim might be a better fit. If they’re interested in more natural beauty and you have the time for the extra drive, the South Rim is the more magical choice.

3. Must-see shows for families:

If your boys loved Jabbawockeez, they will likely enjoy other high-energy, visually spectacular shows. Here are some family-friendly show suggestions:

  • Michael Jackson ONE by Cirque du Soleil: This is a fantastic show, full of music, acrobatics, and dance. It’s a great choice for families who enjoy energetic performances and MJ’s music.
  • O by Cirque du Soleil: Another Cirque du Soleil option, this one focuses on water-themed acrobatics and has a spectacular stage. It’s more of a visual experience, with fewer spoken words, so great for all ages.
  • Blue Man Group: A fun, interactive show filled with music, humor, and unique performances. It’s engaging for both kids and adults.
  • Marvel Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N: If your kids are into superheroes, this interactive exhibit in the Treasure Island Hotel will let them experience the world of Marvel heroes with exhibits, props, and interactive games.

4. Other must-see attractions on or off the Strip:

Las Vegas has a lot of fun and unique activities for families. Here are some suggestions:

  • The Mirage Volcano: A free, outdoor show that erupts nightly with dramatic fire and sound effects, great for kids and a cool photo op.
  • Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay: An awesome aquarium where your kids can see sharks, sea turtles, and other marine life. It’s an educational and fun stop.
  • High Roller Observation Wheel at The LINQ: This giant Ferris wheel offers amazing views of the Strip and the city from 550 feet up—kids will love the views!
  • The Neon Museum: A bit off the Strip but very interesting, especially if your family enjoys history or quirky roadside attractions. It’s home to vintage neon signs from old Vegas.
  • Las Vegas Natural History Museum: A great off-Strip stop for kids interested in dinosaurs, marine life, and ancient history. It's informative and interactive for kids.

It sounds like your trip to Vegas is shaping up to be a great adventure for your family! Enjoy your time exploring and taking in all the kid-friendly experiences the city has to offer. :)
