Hyatt Regency, in August?

Aloha! Based on historic trends - would crowds be overwhelming if we were to book a stay using points at the Hyatt Regency kaanapali… in August? Possibly the second week if that makes much difference. I anticipate it be crowded but is that enough to ruin a stay there? Alternatively we’d still go that same week but opt to pay out of pocket for a non Hyatt property near Napili beach. Pros and cons appreciated. We love Napili beach and we’d spend a beach day or two there regardless of our hotel stay, but I think the kids (aged 8&12) would love the pool and property at the Hyatt. We’ve never been to a large resort. Mom and dad would prefer to use points of course. But if the crowds put a damper on the hotel experience then we might as well skip it? TIA

Visiting the Hyatt Regency in Kaanapali in August can be a very enjoyable experience, but it’s important to consider crowd levels. August is part of Hawaii’s summer high season, when families are on vacation and resorts like the Hyatt Regency are often busy. Pools, restaurants, and beach areas may feel crowded, particularly during peak check-in/check-out times and mid-day.

Here’s a breakdown of considerations for your trip:

  • Crowds at the Hyatt Regency: Expect busy pool areas and popular dining spots, especially mid-week and during weekends. However, the resort is large, with multiple pools and ample beachfront, so while busy, it rarely feels unmanageable. Kids generally love the resort amenities regardless of the crowd.
  • Using points: Staying at the Hyatt with points is a great value and allows you to enjoy a full-service resort experience without spending cash. If maximizing points is a priority, this is a strong option.
  • Alternative near Napili Beach: Smaller properties or vacation rentals in Napili may feel quieter and more intimate. You’d likely have more private beach access and less competition for sand and sunbeds, but you may sacrifice resort-style pools, on-site dining, and other amenities that kids enjoy.

Pros and cons of each option:

  • Hyatt Regency Kaanapali:
    • Pros: Large pool complex, beach access, resort amenities, kid-friendly activities, use of points.
    • Cons: Higher crowd levels in August, especially around pools and main areas.
  • Napili Beach property (non-Hyatt):
    • Pros: Quieter, more intimate beach access, potentially more flexible check-in/out, less crowded for relaxation.
    • Cons: Smaller pool or no pool, fewer on-site amenities, may require cash out-of-pocket instead of using points.

Overall, for families with kids, the Hyatt Regency can still provide a fun and memorable experience even with higher summer crowds. If your priority is maximizing points and enjoying the resort amenities, the crowds are unlikely to ruin the stay. Splitting a couple of days at Napili Beach could also balance your trip, giving you both resort fun and quieter beach time.
