"Time," an exhibition that invites us to explore language, thought, and the depth of new dimensions of painting by Etsu Egami.
The exhibition explores themes of language, human relationships, and the complexities between "communication and misunderstanding." The artist draws on personal experiences as a starting point for her work, focusing on the connection between the spirits of figures who have influenced the worlds of thought and art.
In her previous series, Star Time, she painted portraits of figures from Japanese literature. For this exhibition, she delves into portraits of influential thinkers, writers, and painters, both Asian and Western, including Freud, Laozi, Dostoyevsky, Kafka, Tagore, Nietzsche, Guoji, Confucius, Cézanne, and Andy Warhol.
The artist uses her readings and studies of these figures' lives as inspiration to convey their spirit and essence through portraits. The artworks are not intended to imitate the physical appearance of these figures, but rather to reflect their spirit and the intellectual influence they left behind, using color, line, and composition to reflect the emotions and ethos of each individual.
This exhibition allows viewers to experience the depth of these individuals' ideas and philosophies. Even without photographs or relying on the precise physicality of these figures, the artworks create a profound connection and invite us to interpret the relationship between thought, language, and humanity in a profound and nuanced way.
