🏘Wat Pak Nam Phasi Charoen is a third-class royal temple. Its name comes from its location at the mouth of Khlong Dan, which then branched off from Khlong Bang Luang.
🏞During the reign of King Rama IV, the Phasi Charoen Canal was dug alongside the temple, thus forming a main waterway surrounding the temple on three sides.
🙏🏽Wat Pak Nam is an ancient temple dating back to the mid-Ayutthaya period. It was established by the Ayutthaya royal family and served as the principal temple of Thonburi.
🏘During the reign of King Rama III, it underwent major renovations and was designated a royal temple during the Ayutthaya period, meaning a temple established by the king or queen during the Ayutthaya period.
🧱During the reign of King Rama VI, Wat Pak Nam fell into disrepair and lacked a permanent abbot. The ruling ecclesiastical chief appointed Phra Sot Chandasaro from Wat Phra Chetuphon as its abbot.
🧎♂️ Phra Samuth Sod strictly disciplined monks and novices to adhere to the Dhamma and Vinaya. He taught Samatha-Vipassana meditation and promoted the study of Buddhist scriptures, attracting numerous monks, novices, and laypeople to study and practice Dhamma.
🎆Since then, the temple has steadily grown, becoming a center for Dhamma practice and a center for Pali studies.
Interesting and significant features of the temple include:
🏠 The ubosot (ordination hall) was constructed using Ayutthaya-era construction techniques.
🙏🏽 Phra Buddha Dhammakaya Thepmongkol, a 69-meter-tall Buddha image in the meditation posture, is the tallest in Bangkok and the third tallest in Thailand.
🛕 Phra Maha Ratchamongkol Chedi, built in Thai architectural style with a square base and twelve recessed corners. This chedi blends elements of the Rattanakosin and Lanna periods.
🏚 The Tripitaka Hall, a Tripitaka cabinet shaped like a pavilion. Craftsmanship from the reign of King Narai the Great
