Wat Chedi Luang Worawihan, or Wat Chotikaram, is an ancient royal temple in Chiang Mai, located in the heart of the city on Phra Pok Klao Road.
It boasts a spacious grounds. Upon entering, you'll find the Lanna-style royal viharn at the center. Built by Chao Khun Ubali, the Grand Master, and Chao Kaeo Nawarat in 1928, it was created.
Inside, the principal Buddha image, Phra Attharot, is enshrined in the posture of subduing forgiveness, reflecting early Chiang Mai art influenced by Pala (Indian) art. At the entrance to the viharn, a staircase of Naga serpents, their tails intertwined, forms a magnificent archway. This pair of Nagas, a work of ancient craftsmanship, is considered the most beautiful Naga in Northern Thailand.
Wat Chedi Luang Viharn houses the largest chedi in Chiang Mai Province. It was built during the reign of King Saen Mueang Mak, the seventh king of the Mangrai Dynasty. Later, Phraya Tilokarat granted royal patronage. The craftsmen had to expand the pagoda to be taller and wider than before and invited the Emerald Buddha to be enshrined there for a period of 80 years. Later, in 1545 during the reign of Queen Jiraprapa, an earthquake occurred, causing the top of the pagoda to collapse.
