The Twin Pagodas of Wiang Prueksa Temple

🌳🌲 The Twin Pagodas Temple, located in Chiang Saen Noi or Wiang Prueksa, is a historic site tied to the legend of King Saen Phu. It is said that this was the place where the king rested his army after traveling from Chiang Mai and consulted with his ministers before establishing the city of Chiang Saen. Hence, it was named Wiang Perk Sa or Wiang Prueksa.

Significant ancient structures within the temple include:

🛕🛕 Two pagodas, which give the temple its name, the Twin Pagodas. The exact construction date is unknown, but it is believed that the southern pagoda was built to enshrine the relics of King Kam Fu (A.D. 1338-1345). Its architectural style, featuring a five-tiered spire, suggests it dates back to the early Lanna period, around the late 14th century.

🧱 This may be connected to the legend of King Saen Phu establishing this city before founding Chiang Saen. The site continued to be used in later periods.

🛕 The northern pagoda, with its bell-shaped design, is estimated to date from the mid to late 16th century.

🧱 Archaeological evidence indicates that this temple was one of the most significant in Chiang Saen and Chiang Saen Noi. It also reflects the continuous habitation of the community from the city's founding to its eventual abandonment.

🏕 Today, the temple is an active monastery. The ancient structures have been restored and the surrounding landscape improved.
