[Unexpected Encounters with Wild Animals]

Fiordland offers a high chance of encountering wild animals in their natural habitat. During our Milford Sound cruise, we were able to get up close and personal with seals sunbathing on a rocky island. If you're lucky, you might even spot dolphins or even penguins. Near the Homer Tunnel, we even encountered Kea, New Zealand's playful mountain parrot. The high-power binoculars I'd brought with me through my "travel grant" proved a huge help. September's relative quiet allowed us to better observe the animals' unsuspecting behavior.
