Standing proudly by the Esplanade in George Town, Fort Cornwallis is the largest and most intact fort in Malaysia. Built in the late 18th century by the British East India Company under Captain Francis Light, it was originally meant to protect the island from naval attacks.
Inside, you’ll find historical cannons, a chapel, prison cells, and exhibitions that tell the story of Penang’s colonial past. Despite its military design, the fort never actually saw battle — instead, it became an important administrative center during British rule.
Today, Fort Cornwallis is a popular heritage site where visitors can stroll through its star-shaped walls, enjoy the sea breeze, and take a step back into Penang’s early history.
