It only takes about 30 minutes by train from Nagoya to the historic city of Inuyama, which retains a strong Edo style and elegant natural scenery. It is a town suitable for a leisurely day trip.
Morning National Treasure Inuyama Castle+
The first stop is of course Inuyama Castle! This is one of the oldest surviving wooden castle towers in Japan, having been passed down from the Warring States Period to the present day. Climb up the castle tower and overlook the Kiso River and the distant mountains. Surrounded by cherry blossoms in spring, it is as beautiful as a painting.
Then go to Sanko Inari Shrine and Harizuna Shrine to pray. Both shrines are next to Inuyama Castle. The pink torii tunnel at Sanko Inari Shrine is super dreamy and is a popular spot for couples to pray for a good marriage. If you are tired, you may want to take a break in a nearby teahouse and drink a bowl of matcha with Japanese snacks.
Afternoon Food Tour of Inuyama Castle Town and Stroll Along the Kiso River
The old castle town street retains the Edo-style machiya buildings and has now been transformed into a gathering place for specialty snacks and cultural and creative shops. We recommend trying the grilled dumplings, gohei mochi, fried skewers, and the "love apple candy" that's so cute you won't want to eat it! This is also a good place to take photos and check in, and many people will rent a kimono to experience it. After entering the city, you can take a walk along the riverside and feel the tranquil atmosphere where nature and history are intertwined.
If you have enough time, you can also choose to extend your trip to the Meiji Village Museum or Inuyama Cultural Museum to continue exploring the Meiji style and local culture.
