A Profound Remembrance on Mabuni Hill

Jamie W and I stumbled upon a profound spot during our island drive. Positioned on the southern tip, the museum and its surrounding grounds honor the more than 250,000 lives lost in the Battle of Okinawa between March and September 1945. This total, which included 150,000 Okinawan civilians, surpasses the combined casualties of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Dramatically situated on Mabuni Hill overlooking the Pacific, the site comprises various elements, starting with the extensive museum that preserves battle memories through vivid photographs, artifacts, testimonials, and dioramas. An observation tower offers breathtaking views of the grounds and the rugged coastline. The museum was founded in 1975. The newest feature, the Cornerstone of Peace, was completed in 1995. It presents a memorable view, with concentric arcs of black granite blocks bearing the names of those who died. This design is reminiscent of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Numerous individual memorials are scattered across the grounds, but a 2-3 hour visit should be enough to explore the grounds thoughtfully.
