#March Good Places 2025
Sakurajima is an active volcano located about 4 kilometers from the center of Kagoshima and must be reached by cruise. The ferry time is about 15 to 20 minutes or so, some travel day passes will charter a boat. Sakurajima is also known as the Seven Color Island because of the terrain, which presents different appearances at different times and in different directions.
Although it is a volcanic attraction, unlike Kumamoto Aso Volcano, you can visit the crater up close. Attractions are mostly observation decks with different directions such as Arimura Lava Observatory where you can see Sakurajima from different angles from the highest point. There is also the Yunopei Observatory and the Sakurajima Lava Waterfront Park foot bath where you can take a dip. As for whether the Sakurajima volcano is active or not, whether there is smoke from the top of the mountain, whether it sprays volcanic ash or not depends on luck.
