[Kagoshima] Sakurajima Ferry

While ferry routes across the country are shrinking due to a yearly decline in passenger numbers, the Sakurajima Ferry operates 24 hours a day and remains a vital transportation option for local residents! When I used it, it was packed with local students. It runs every 15-20 minutes during the day, so you can board the ferry without making a reservation, just like you would a train. It arrives so quickly that car passengers can stay in their cars the whole time (though moving to a guest room after departure is prohibited).
The terminal on the Kagoshima City side has several restaurants and souvenir shops, and there's also a cafe on the Sakurajima side.
The fare is quite reasonable at 200 yen per adult.

By the way, Sakurajima is currently experiencing no major eruptions, so it's safe to stay there as usual. Kagoshima City is unique in having a dedicated dumping area for the occasional ash.
