Kotoku-in Temple is a Buddhist temple located in Kamakura City, Japan. It is famous for its national treasure-level bronze statue of Amida Buddha, commonly known as the "Kamakura Buddha". This Buddha statue is about 13.35 meters tall and weighs 121 tons. It is the second largest bronze Buddha statue in Japan, second only to the Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple in Nara. The Great Buddha of Kamakura in Kotoku-in was built between the 12th and 13th centuries and was once covered with gold foil. Despite having experienced many natural disasters, such as tsunamis, the Buddha statue still stands.
The entrance fee to Kotoku-in Temple is 300 yen for adults, 150 yen for elementary school students, and free for children under 6 years old. Visitors can also pay an additional 20 yen to go inside the statue. There are no vast gardens or complex buildings around the temple, but this makes the solemnity of the Kamakura Buddha more prominent, allowing people to focus more on the Buddha statue itself when worshiping.
In addition to the Great Buddha of Kamakura, there are many other attractions worth visiting near Kotoku-in Temple, such as the Hasegawa Kannon Temple and the Hasegawa Daibutsu-dori Shopping Street, where visitors can enjoy delicious food and buy souvenirs. Whether you are interested in Buddhist culture or simply appreciate art and history, Kotoku-in Temple is a destination not to be missed.
