🏡 Wat Nong Waeng, originally named Wat Nuea, was established in 1789 along with Wat Klang and Wat That. It was built by Thao Phia Mueang Pan, the first lord of the city, at Ban Bueng Bon (Bueng Kaen Nakhon). Later, in 1811, Thao Chammut moved the city to Ban Don Phan Chat in the Maha Sarakham area. Ban Bueng Bon became an old city, so the temple was named Wat Nong Waeng Mueang Kao.
🙏 Wat Nong Waeng was elevated to the status of a royal temple in 1984.
Important and interesting things in the temple include:
🛕 Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon, a nine-tiered pagoda with a square base measuring 50 meters on each side. The spire is a replica of Phra That Kham Kaen. Built on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the accession to the throne of King Rama IX and the 200th anniversary of the Great Auspiciousness of Khon Kaen City, the 80-meter-high pagoda has 4 small relics located at the 4 corners and is surrounded by a 7-headed naga wall. It is a combination of Dvaravati and Indochinese art.
🙏The first floor of the pagoda has 4 principal Buddha images and the top floor enshrines the relics of the Lord Buddha.
