Upon arriving at Chikurin-ji Temple in Kochi City, my eyes were immediately drawn to the majestic five-story pagoda. The vermilion structure stood out vividly against the backdrop of the blue sky and lush greenery, with its finial gleaming in the sunlight like a lighthouse guarding the temple grounds. Chikurin-ji, one of the 88 temples of the Shikoku Pilgrimage, was founded during the Nara period and boasts over a thousand years of history. It enshrines Manjushri Bodhisattva, symbolizing wisdom.
As I slowly ascended the stone steps to the hillside, the rustling sound of the wind brushing through the bamboo leaves brought a sense of tranquility to my heart. Beside the five-story pagoda lies a serene garden, where you can sit on a bench and take in a panoramic view of Kochi City. The scenery is especially poetic during spring when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom.
This place is not only a must-visit for pilgrims but also a treasure trove for history enthusiasts and photography lovers.
