Kyoto has an extremely important place in Japanese history. From the time Emperor Kanmu moved the capital of Japan from Nara to Kyoto (then called “Heian-kyo”) in 794, Kyoto remained the political, cultural, and religious center of Japan until 1869 when Emperor Meiji moved the capital to Tokyo. During this period of about 1075 years, Kyoto was the capital of Japan, so it was called the "Ancient Capital".
Kyoto retains a large number of traditional Japanese architecture as well as cultural heritage, which is a symbol of traditional Japanese culture. There are many famous temples, shrines and historic buildings like Kinkakuji Temple, Ginkakuji Temple, Kiyomizu Temple, Nijo Castle, etc. These places are not only important historical sites in Japan, but also World Heritage Sites. One of the most famous temples in Kyoto, Kiyomizu-dera Temple was built in 778 and is known for its magnificent wooden structure and beautiful cherry blossoms. We strolled along the stone steps to the main hall of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, which overlooks the whole of Kyoto, where during the cherry blossom season, the slopes of Kiyomizu-dera are covered with cherry trees, the pink cherry blossoms and the ancient architecture, it’s like traveling through time. #JapanKyoto
