Don't miss this understated yet stunning Buddhist sanctuary in Kyoto! As the head temple of the Pure Land Buddhism, its history dates back to the samurai era. While its architecture is simple, the grounds offer stunning panoramic views of Kyoto city. 🌆

Getting There
Chion-in Temple is a 15-minute taxi ride from JR Kyoto Station. If taking a bus from JR Kyoto Station, take Kyoto Municipal Bus No. 206 and get off at Chion-in-mae Station, then walk for 5 minutes.
Alternatively, take the Karasuma Subway Line from JR Kyoto Station, transfer to the Tozai Subway Line at Karasuma-Oike Station, and get off at Higashiyama Station. Chion-in Temple is an 8-minute walk away.
This temple is most striking for three reasons:
1. Stunning views: From the grounds, you can overlook the entire city of Kyoto, especially in the evening when the sunset glows on Kyoto City, which is absolutely stunning!
2. A sense of history: As the head temple of the Pure Land Buddhism, every stone here carries centuries of history.
3. Architectural aesthetics: While the design is simple, the overall layout and details imbue it with the essence of Buddhist culture.
💡Visit Tips:
- Visit on clear days for the best views.
- After 3 PM, the light softens, making for excellent photography.
- Some areas within the grounds require you to remove your shoes, so wearing slip-on shoes is recommended.
- Located very close to Hanami-koji and Yasaka Shrine, it's a great option to visit on the same day.
