Fohui Temple, originally named Fuhui Temple, is located on the mountainside of the northern ridge of Tianlong Mountain in Chengjiayu, Jinyuan District, Taiyuan City. It is said that "Fohui Temple existed before Tianlong Temple," making it a Buddhist cultural site with a history of over a thousand years in the Taiyuan area. The core relic within the temple is the Fohui Temple Grotto, carved during the Sui and Tang dynasties, more than 1,000 years ago. Due to its exquisite statue craftsmanship and good preservation, it has become an important physical resource for studying Buddhist art in North China during the Sui and Tang periods. The grotto is entirely carved into a natural giant rock, classified as a medium-sized grotto in the Taiyuan area, measuring 8.2 meters long, 4.26 meters high, and 1.63 meters thick. Due to geological changes, the grotto currently tilts from east (higher) to west (lower), with the eastern bottom end fractured and uplifted by more than 1 meter. The sculpted figures are full-bodied, with smooth and clear clothing lines, showcasing the typical stone carving art style of the Sui and Tang periods, reflecting high craftsmanship and artistic value.
