The Leshan Giant Buddha, formerly known as the "Maitreya Statue" and "Jiading Giant Buddha", is also known as the Lingyun Giant Buddha. It is located on the east bank of the Minjiang River in Leshan City, Sichuan Province, next to the Lingyun Temple. It is close to the confluence of the Dadu River, Qingyi River and Minjiang River. It covers an area of 17.88 square kilometers. It is a national key cultural relic protection unit and a world cultural heritage.
The Leshan Giant Buddha is the largest existing cliff stone statue in the world, and is known as "the mountain is a Buddha, and the Buddha is a mountain." The Leshan Giant Buddha is 71 meters tall. Its head is as high as the mountain. It is 14.7 meters high and 10 meters wide. It has 1,051 hair buns and 7-meter-long ears. It is carved into the mountain and sits overlooking the river. It looks solemn and majestic.
The Leshan Giant Buddha has extremely high historical and artistic value. Su Shi, Lu You, Fan Chengda and other literati and poets traveled here and left behind many famous works that have been passed down through the ages. In front of the huge Buddha statue, people watch, worship, petition and fulfill their vows. People from all corners of the world gather here. The Buddha's eyes see all living beings. The mountain, the temple and the Maitreya have protected Leshan for thousands of years.
