Guangdong Maoming｜A Day of Seclusion on Fangji Island

Fangji Island is located off the coast of Dianbai County in Maoming City, Guangdong Province, within the Nanhai Port area. It is a must-pass island for routes heading from eastern Guangdong to Beibu Gulf and Zhanjiang.

Is Fangji Island really an island where chickens are released? The name is quite amusing. 😆

According to legend, sailors passing by would release a chicken on the island as an offering for safe travels, hence the name Fangji Island.

The waters around Fangji Island are crystal clear, with depths ranging from 6 to 12 meters and visibility of about 7 to 8 meters, making it a highly transparent and picturesque island.

This small island is a paradise for those who love tranquility, beaches, sunsets, the sea, ocean breezes, and diving 🤿. It’s not crowded at all (probably because the costs are considered a bit high, but given its seclusion, the prices are understandable). During summer vacations, however, it becomes livelier.

Diving here offers the chance to see many adorable marine creatures, which is incredibly enjoyable. (Of course, it’s best to dive under the guidance of experienced instructors. Please don’t take risks by diving on your own. 🥹)

If you arrive early, a day trip is sufficient. If you arrive in the afternoon or evening, you can stay overnight at a hotel and take your time exploring.

(Some hotels that were once popular now appear a bit outdated, so it’s a good idea to do some research before your trip in case you need to stay overnight.)

If you plan to enjoy the beach or go diving, remember to bring swimwear, sunglasses 🕶️, and a hat 🧢. The sun can be quite strong on sunny days by the sea.

There are quite a few mosquitoes on the island, so don’t forget to bring mosquito repellent or anti-itch cream just in case.

If time permits, you can hike around the island, which takes about 3-4 hours, allowing you to fully appreciate the surroundings of Fangji Island. Alternatively, you can take a sightseeing car around the island (50 RMB) or rent an electric scooter (100 RMB per hour).

During high tide or rough waves, make sure to stay in safe areas. Safety first.

Transportation:

1. By car or rental 🚗: Navigate to the parking lot 🅿️ at Fangji Island (Bohe Port), then take a boat to Fangji Island. (Be sure to check the boat schedule before departure. There’s also a timetable available at the port.)

🚢 If you don’t take the passenger ferry to Fangji Island, you can opt for a speedboat, which is thrilling and time-saving (though it might get your adrenaline pumping 🙈).

2. By train/high-speed rail: Arrive at Maoming Station, then take a taxi or ride-hailing service to the parking lot 🅿️ at Fangji Island (Bohe Port), and then take a boat to the island.

Personally, I recommend renting a car or taking a taxi. This way, you won’t get stuck if you’re unfamiliar with the route, and you can enjoy your trip with peace of mind.
