Beigan, Matsu | Bold Stronghold: A Military Fortress on the Front Lines of Battle, a Historical Witness in Peacetime

Facing the boundless ocean, the Bold Fortress in Beigan, Matsu, was once one of the most prominent fortifications during the war years. Carved from the solid rock face, it is crisscrossed with tunnels and dotted with bunkers, exuding a forbidding military atmosphere.

Walking along the narrow corridor, the chisel marks still bear the stone walls, and the sound of waves crashing and wind echoes in my ears. The gun muzzles and observation holes in the fortress seem to still gaze out toward the sea. That tense vigilance has long since become a historical memory.

However, today, the Bold Fortress has transformed from a bastion of war into a showcase of peace. It serves as a reminder that the protection and sacrifices made for this land were precisely to ensure stability and freedom for future generations. Standing high atop the fortress, I gaze out into the distance, where the vast sea and sky merge, and the wind howls. What I feel at this moment is not just the grandeur of the geography, but the intertwining weight of history and the value of peace.
