In the "Nihon Shoki" (720), Amaterasu Omikami said to the Three Munakata Goddesses, "If you help the successive emperors, the successive emperors will worship you."

This is because Munakata was the first international port in Japan,
and if you fulfilled diplomatic, trade, and national defense functions with overseas countries,
the emperor would worship you.
This is supported by the traces of national rituals from the approximately 80,000 national treasures excavated from Okinoshima.

A national ritual is when the emperor's messenger, an imperial envoy, visits the site and holds a festival,
and it is speculated that the national rituals in Munakata were quite large-scale based on the national treasures excavated.

Many of the artifacts excavated on Okinoshima date from the 4th to 9th centuries,
and it is not clear to what extent state rituals were performed during that time,
but from old records and other sources we can learn that the emperor's envoys were sent to Munakata.
