Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Art Museum (Okimyu) is located about a 10-minute walk from Omoromachi Monorail Station in Naha City. The Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Art Museum is the largest cultural facility in the prefecture, combining a museum and an art museum. It is affectionately known to locals as "Okimyu." A variety of events are held inside the museum, from free permanent exhibitions to paid special exhibitions. The exterior of "Okimyu" alone is an artistic work, and it is also popular as a photogenic spot. The exterior concept is "21st century castle (gusuku)." The concrete, made from a mixture of Ryukyu limestone and white cement, is modern and beautiful. In addition, a tall tree-like pillar stands in the entrance hall inside the museum. Soft light overflows from the skylight above. This is said to be based on the unique Ryukyu scenery of sunlight filtering through the trees onto a sacred utaki (mountain shrine).
