Shuri Castle in Okinawa

Shuri Castle was the royal castle of the Ryukyu Dynasty and is the largest castle (gusuku) in Okinawa Prefecture.

Before the war, the main hall and other buildings were designated as national treasures, but they no longer exist due to the Battle of Okinawa in 1945 (Showa 20) and the construction of the University of the Ryukyus after the war.

The current main hall was restored in 1992 (Heisei 4).

In 2000 (Heisei 12), it was registered as a World Heritage Site along with Nakijin Castle as "Gusuku and Related Properties of the Ryukyu Kingdom," but seven buildings, including the main hall, north hall, and south hall, were destroyed in a large fire on October 31, 2019 (Reiwa 1).

I miss Shuri Castle, which I visited before that.
