Family Fun & Bargains in Japan’s Shopping Paradise
Osaka is a shopper’s dream that satisfies every member of the family—from beauty lovers and gadget geeks to anime fans and bargain hunters. On our recent trip, we discovered just how diverse and exciting Osaka’s shopping scene can be. Here’s a guide to help you make the most of your Osaka shopping adventure.
💋Beauty Shopping in Shinsaibashi – A Haven for the Ladies
Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Street and the Dotonbori area are overflowing with Japan’s most popular drugstores, such as Matsumoto Kiyoshi, Sundrug, and OS Drug. These stores stock everything from Shiseido skincare, ROHTO eye drops, to cult-favorite Saborino face masks.
💪🏽Treasure Hunting for the Guys – Secondhand Stores in Temma
While not traditionally avid shoppers, the men in our group were hooked by the secondhand scene near Temma Station. Popular chains like Hard Off, Book Off, and App Temma offer a mix of vintage electronics, cameras, vinyl records, and retro collectibles. You’ll also find secondhand designer goods like watches and bags in good condition at surprising prices.
Fun for the Kids 😁 – Toys, Games, and Anime Merchandise
Osaka isn’t just about takoyaki and theme parks—the kids absolutely loved Don Quijote (Donki). This all-in-one megastore has everything: snacks, stationery, toys, anime collectibles, and Nintendo Switch games. The Dotonbori branch is open 24/7, making it easy to squeeze in some fun shopping after dinner.
💰Tax-Free Tips:
	•	Bring your passport to claim tax-free savings (8% for consumables).
	•	Compare prices between stores—identical products can vary greatly in cost.
	•	Most shops handle tax refund processing on the spot for purchases over ¥5,000 (pre-tax), making it fast and hassle-free.
👍Bonus Tip: Snack while you shop! Temma is full of local bites like takoyaki, oden, fresh sushi, and more—combining the best of shopping and street food.
‼️Important:
	•	Consumables are sealed in bags and cannot be opened or used before leaving Japan. Using them early may void your refund.
