The Ritz-Carlton Osaka
It is Marriott’s first Ritz-Carlton in Japan and also the first luxury hotel in Osaka, having opened in 1997, a full 10 years before the second Ritz-Carlton in Tokyo.
Perhaps because the hotel accepts suite vouchers, the experience holds its own among Western-style hotels in Japan. Opinions on the design and facilities vary, but the blend of modern and classic is the Ritz’s style. The service is truly impeccable, as it should be.
Beyond the hotel itself, I discovered some even more interesting details—navigating through the massive Umeda Station and entering the Umeda Twin Towers where the Ritz is located.
The wall lamps throughout the entire underground space connecting the towers to the railway are all by Louis Poulsen. The white brick walls paired with custom white lampshades quietly blend into the bustling crowd.
The commercial complex at the base, Herbis, belongs to Hankyu Hanshin, while the building and hotel owner is the Mitsubishi Group. The hotel and commercial complex opened simultaneously, so these lamps have probably been there since 1997.
Recently, Louis Poulsen’s showroom also moved into this location, which I guess has long-standing ties with the group. While wandering around, I even found they placed a pipe organ inside the building—truly impressive.
