Among the many ancient sites in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Wat Na Phra Meru is one of the few that survived the destruction when Ayutthaya fell to the Burmese in 2310. This uniqueness makes the temple one of the most complete in preserving the original art and ancient sites.
The principal Buddha image in the ordination hall is a large bronze Buddha image from the late U Thong period, beautiful and still, symbolizing stability amidst change. The small chapel on the side also has a “Buddha image in royal attire”, which is rarely seen in Thailand.
The atmosphere in the temple is quiet and shady, suitable for a contemplative walk, not only to study history, but also an opportunity to learn the meaning of “survival” in both material and spiritual terms.
For teachers, students, or travelers interested in history, Wat Na Phra Meru is a destination that provides profound lessons through architecture, art, and a sense of tranquility that can be felt without much explanation.
