The Brahma Bell Pavilion (Beomjongru) is a highlight, not just visually with its beautiful coloring, but audibly. Catching the morning or evening ritual, when the four sacred instruments—the massive Brahma Bell, the Dharma Drum, the Cloud Gong, and the Wooden Fish—are played, is an incredibly moving experience. The deep, resonant sound of the bell ringing out is said to save all sentient beings from suffering, and hearing it echo across the courtyard is truly soul-stirring. I was fortunate enough to witness a monk strike the huge drum, and the sheer power of the sound was mesmerizing. It's a vivid, loud, and tangible display of living, breathing tradition that connects you directly to the long history of Korean Buddhism.
