Tucked away on the southern edge of Shanghai, Fengjing Ancient Town unfolds like a living scroll — a water town where history flows as gently as the canals that shape it. Cobblestone lanes twist past whitewashed walls and black-tiled roofs, while red lanterns sway in the breeze like quiet echoes of the past.
I wandered slowly, crossing centuries-old stone bridges arched over still waters. Locals sipped tea under wooden eaves, calligraphers inked bold strokes in quiet studios, and hand-painted New Year prints dried in the sun — remnants of the town’s artistic soul.
Here, time softens. You hear it in the splash of a paddleboat, feel it in the warm steam rising from a bowl of noodles, and see it in the faded paint of Ming- and Qing-era shopfronts. Fengjing isn’t frozen in the past — it’s alive, gently carrying tradition forward with grace.
For a moment, I wasn’t a visitor — I was part of the story.
