Dragging my suitcase out of Exit D of Huangbeiling Metro Station, I looked up and spotted the sign of Shenzhen Holiday Inn Express—tucked into the streetscape along Yanhe South Road, yet standing out with its understated modern Chinese aesthetic. As someone who frequently travels between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, I prioritize convenience and comfort when choosing a hotel. This one, just a short distance from Luohu Port and steps away from the metro, did not disappoint.
Check-in was pleasantly efficient. The moment I gave my name, the staff handed me the key card and added, "The room has a Xiaodu smart system—lights and curtains can be controlled by voice. Give it a try!" A lifesaver for travelers lugging heavy bags, sparing me the hassle of fumbling for switches.
Opening the door to the duplex suite, my first thought was, "This feels too spacious for Shenzhen." The 5.6-meter ceiling height made the space feel airy—downstairs was the living area and bathroom, while upstairs housed the bedroom. The wooden grain of the staircase railing added warmth, complementing the ink-wash decor on the walls, blending modernity with Chinese elegance. My favorite part? The bedroom’s floor-to-ceiling window. Drawing back the curtains revealed the bustling streets, and at night, the glow of Shenzhen’s city life seeped in—just enough to relax without the noise.
The next morning, I made a point to visit the Chinese restaurant on the first floor. Expecting the usual mediocre hotel breakfast, I was won over by the freshly made wonton noodles—springy bamboo-pressed noodles, plump wontons, and a light shrimp-infused broth. Paired with a handcrafted coffee, it was the perfect wake-up call. During the day, I returned to use the laundry room after errands—the dryer left my clothes toasty, and the adjacent lounge with books and magazines made waiting more enjoyable than staying in the room.
As a "port regular," the location was the biggest win. A 10-minute taxi or two metro stops to Luohu Port made it effortless, even with luggage. Coming back early in the evening, I strolled to Dongmen Shopping District for bubble tea and fish balls, soaking in Shenzhen’s energy before leisurely heading back. If tired, a quick 30-minute gym session left me refreshed.
By the third day, I noticed countless thoughtful touches: clear signage in the underground parking lot (a boon for drivers), a business center with ready-to-use printers (no panic over last-minute documents), and even elevator diffusers releasing a subtle fragrance.
On checkout day, Xiaodu’s gentle voice said, "Welcome back next time." It struck me—a great hotel is never just a cold stopover. In a fast-paced city like Shenzhen, Holiday Inn Express feels like a reliable harbor—convenient enough to ease your mind, attentive enough to put you at ease. Next time I’m shuttling between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, this will likely be my "go-to spot."
