Located in Anping District, Tainan City, Taiwan, Anping Fort is one of Taiwan's earliest castle ruins. Originally built as Fort Zeelandia by the Dutch in the 17th century, it is now a significant historical site and a designated national monument. Construction began in 1624 by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and was completed in 1634. It served as Taiwan's administrative and trade center. It was captured by Zheng Chenggong in 1662 and renamed the Anping Town General's Headquarters. During the Qing Dynasty, it gradually declined due to siltation in the Taijiang River. It was restored by the Japanese colonial government in 1895 and incorporated into tourism management in 1975, becoming the current Anping Fort. The fort retains the Dutch-era brick walls and watchtower outside the south gate, showcasing early colonial history and attracting numerous domestic and international tourists.
Anping Fort is divided into the Inner Fort and the Outer Fort. The Inner Fort houses a watchtower and museum showcasing Dutch-era artifacts and early Taiwanese history. The Outer Fort retains some of its ancient walls and gardens, making it suitable for walking exploration. The museum displays artillery, pottery, and documents from the Dutch era. An air-conditioned exhibition hall features historical films. Visitors can ascend the observation tower for panoramic views of the Anping area and Taijiang National Park. Rest areas and shops are available within the park. Some activities may require reservations, so advance confirmation is recommended.
