As a photographer, Kyū-Iwasaki-tei Garden is a fantastic challenge and a rewarding visit. While the no-photos-inside rule is a bit restrictive, the exterior of the Josiah Conder-designed mansion is a stunning subject. The contrast of the Victorian mansion's intricate woodwork against the simple, green Japanese lawn is a truly unique aesthetic. I highly recommend visiting in the morning light for the best exterior shots—the shadows on the balcony and the Jacobean detailing are fantastic. The small Japanese garden also offers some beautiful compositions, particularly the view of the Western house peeking over the traditional walls. It's a visually striking location that immediately sets it apart from other parks in Tokyo. Come ready to focus on exterior shots and the blend of two different worlds!
