🏛️ Exploring the Former Iwasaki House Gardens, Tokyo

#hellohalloween

Built in 1896 as the residence of Hisaya Iwasaki, the third president of Mitsubishi and eldest son of founder Yataro Iwasaki, the Former Iwasaki House Gardens is one of Tokyo’s most elegant examples of Meiji-era architecture.

Three buildings remain today — the Western-style mansion, billiard room, and Japanese-style hall — each showcasing a fascinating blend of cultures. The Western-style mansion was designed by Josiah Conder, a British architect known as the “father of modern Japanese architecture.” Its grand staircase, intricate ceilings, and stained-glass windows all speak to the luxury and refinement of the era.

I joined a guided tour led by one of the garden’s knowledgeable staff, who shared stories about the Iwasaki family and the unique architectural details of the residence. It made the visit even more enjoyable and insightful.

In the garden stands a magnificent 400-year-old ginkgo tree, which turns a brilliant golden yellow in autumn — the perfect complement to the Western mansion’s facade. I’d love to return during the fall season to see this breathtaking contrast of architecture and autumn leaves.
