The Beauty of the Remaining Japanese Structure
While the grand Western mansion is the star attraction, don't miss the Japanese-style building, which is connected by a covered walkway. This part of the estate, built in the traditional shoin-zukuri style, is perhaps the most peaceful. The opportunity to step into the cool, dark tatami rooms and see the beautiful fusuma (sliding door) paintings by famous Meiji-era artist Hashimoto Gahō is exceptional. It’s here that you truly feel the heart of the original residential complex. Looking out from the engawa (veranda) to the quiet, perfectly framed garden is a classic Japanese moment of contemplation. Though the original compound was much larger, the intimacy of the remaining Japanese structure is beautiful. Stop here, sit for a moment, and let the historical tranquility wash over you.
