Kyū-Iwasaki-tei Garden is far more than just a garden—it’s a stunning, tangible glimpse into the Meiji era's radical modernization. The main Western-style mansion, designed by the British architect Josiah Conder, is a masterpiece of Jacobean architecture. Walking into the ornate entrance hall with its grand staircase is like being instantly transported to a 19th-century European estate. The real magic, though, is the seamless connection to the adjacent traditional Japanese-style structure, and the small Swiss-style billiard house. This fascinating architectural "marriage" symbolizes a pivotal moment in Japanese history. It perfectly captures the opulence of the Iwasaki (Mitsubishi) family and their desire to embrace both traditional Japanese design and Western grandeur. It is an incredibly peaceful and insightful spot, and a must-visit for any architecture or history buff looking for a serene escape from the Shitamachi bustle.
