Hokkaido Suburban Choice: Lake Toya

When you come to Hokkaido, in addition to major attractions such as Sapporo, Hakodate, and Otaru, you should also not miss some of the suburban scenery! This time we’d like to introduce Lake Toya, which is about a two-hour drive from Sapporo!

This time I chose to take a short self-driving tour. As soon as I left the highway for about 10 minutes, I could see the beautiful lake view! After parking in the free parking lot by the lake, you can walk along the lake and take lots of beautiful photos! There is also a lake tour boat next to the parking lot for you to take, so you can enjoy the lake view from another angle. If you don’t have an international driver’s license, you can also take the "Beidou" express train and then transfer to a bus to arrive. The journey takes about 2.5-3 hours.

Afterwards, walk back to the hot spring street from the lakeside, where you can also visit some boutiques to buy gifts🎁. There are also some restaurants that serve the famous local soup curry🍛If you are an anime fan, you can't miss it, because Lake Toya is actually closely related to the anime "Gintama", so there are also many peripherals of this anime here!

In addition to choosing a short visit, staying in a hot spring hotel is also a good choice! Lake Toya is also a great place for a night and two meals, especially for those who don’t drive! This way you can have more time to enjoy the beautiful scenery, soak in the hot springs, or even visit other nearby attractions without having to rush! In winter, when it snows, the lake view is even more beautiful, so we highly recommend visiting in winter! One last tip - remember to check the weather conditions before departure, and be sure to avoid going on days with heavy snow!
