The Terrifying Stillness of the Sphinxes"
The famous Sphinx statues along the terrace were brilliant props. Several actors, covered in heavy, pale makeup and ancient-looking sculpted clothing, were positioned seamlessly alongside the actual stone statues. They maintained an impossible stillness for minutes on end. The horror lay in the uncertainty; you had to study each statue carefully, trying to discern the difference between cold marble and living flesh. When one of them finally moved—just a fractional turn of the head—the surprise was purely psychological and incredibly potent. It utilized the park's existing art to perfection, turning iconic landmarks into predatory sentinels.
