Vientiane is the capital and largest city of Laos, situated on the Mekong River.
It is home to Pha That Luang, the most important national monument in Laos, and is recognized as a national and Buddhist symbol in Laos. The area is also home to several important temples.
Important landmarks include:
- Patuxai, a symbol of the Lao people's victory over colonial rule, modeled after the Arc de Triomphe in France but with Laotian art.
- Hao Phra Kaew, originally a temple and home to the Emerald Buddha. It is now a museum and souvenir shop.
- Pha That Luang, a large, gleaming golden stupa containing the relics of the Buddha and a symbol of the country's national emblem.
- Wat Sisaket, another temple not destroyed during the war, boasts the largest collection of large and small Buddha images.
Note: The croissants here are cheap and delicious.
