Wang Xizhi once wrote, 'To the south of the sea lies Fangcheng Mountain, with cliffs standing tall like city walls.' The Ming Dynasty traveler Xu Xiake also visited Fangshan and recorded his experiences in 'Postscript to the Tour of Yandang Mountain'.
