Introducing General Xu Shiyou's Tomb

Xu Shiyou was born in Xujiawa, Hepu Village, Tianpu Township, Xin County, Xinyang City, Henan Province. When he was a teenager, he worked as a handyman for a martial arts master because his family was poor. Later, he went to Shaolin Temple to learn martial arts. In 1955, General Xu Shiyou was awarded the rank of general, and served as Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, Commander of the Nanjing Military Region, Commander of the Guangzhou Military Region, Deputy Minister of National Defense, and Member of the Standing Committee of the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China.

General Xu Shiyou's tomb is located on Lailong Ridge, at the foot of Wanzi Mountain in Xujiawa. Facing south, it leans against Lailong Ridge and overlooks Wuhu Mountain to the west. Surrounding the tomb are ancient trees and exotic pines, and a vibrant array of mountain flowers. Constructed by the Nanjing Military Region, the tomb spans approximately 90 square meters. The dome-shaped tomb is 2 meters high, 4.2 meters in diameter, 80 centimeters thick, and weighs approximately 10 tons. It is constructed from 91 fan-shaped blocks and one circular block of white granite.

General Xu Shiyou was the only national leader granted special permission for burial since cremation was introduced in my country. "In life, I shall be loyal to my country; in death, I shall be filial to my mother"—this was the general's life motto. After his death, the Central Committee issued a directive, stating that General Xu Shiyou possessed a unique character, unique experiences, and extraordinary contributions, and therefore warranted special treatment, allowing him to be buried in his hometown. On November 9, 1985, the general returned to his hometown and rests in peace on Lailong Ridge, beneath Wanzi Mountain in Xujiawa, Tianpu Township.

The subtropical monsoon climate is perfect for travel in all seasons. General Xu Shiyou was a time-tested proletarian revolutionary of the Communist Party of China and a distinguished military commander who rose through the ranks from a soldier.

The inscription on General Xu Shiyou's tomb was written by the renowned Chinese calligrapher and painter Fan Zeng. The front features seven bold, bold, and large characters in running cursive script: "Comrade Xu Shiyou's Tomb." The back, in a graceful, vertical cursive script, features a biography of General Xu Shiyou. Behind the tomb lies a curved, waterproof retaining wall constructed of mountain rocks. Surrounding the tomb are verdant pines and cypresses, creating a lush, green landscape.
