Zhang Feizhai

Introducing Zhang Feizhai

Zhang Fei Village is located on the west peak of Mangdang Mountain. The inner and outer walls of the west peak are built with bluestone, taking advantage of the natural mountain shape. In the first year of Jian'an, Zhang Fei fled to Mangdang Mountain after his defeat and set up camp there to recruit soldiers.

The Yongcheng County Chronicles record that this was the place where "Liu Bei of Shu Han bid farewell to Yuan Shao and reunited with Zhang Fei in Xuzhou." The Zizhi Tongjian notes that after the death of Xuzhou Governor Tao Qian in the first year of Emperor Xian of Han (194 AD), Liu Bei took control of Xuzhou. Yuan Shu was displeased, and in the first year of Jian'an (196 AD), "Yuan Shu attacked Liu Bei to seize Xuzhou. Bei sent his military commander, Zhang Fei, to guard Xiapi... Yuan Shu wrote to Lü Bu, urging him to attack Xiapi and promising him military supplies. Lü Bu was delighted and led his army to attack by land and sea. Lü Bu's General of the Central Army, Xu Dan of Danyang, opened the gates to welcome him. Zhang Fei fled, and Lü Bu captured Lü Bu's wife, officers, and family members." Following his defeat, Zhang Fei fled to Mangdang Mountain, where he established a camp and recruited soldiers.

Zhang Fei Village retains two inner and outer walls, built of bluestone against the mountainside. The inner wall is approximately 40 meters long from north to south and 25 meters wide from east to west, with a circumference of 130 meters. The outer wall, with a remaining height of 0.5 to 1 meter on the south side and a width of approximately 1 meter, is approximately 250 meters long from north to south, with a circumference of 900 meters. On the west wall of the outer village lies Zhang Fei's "Horse Drinking Spring," which never dries up. Legend has it that this was where Zhang Fei drew water and watered his horses. The spring is circular, with a diameter of 4.5 meters. In the center of the village stands a cliff carving, written in regular script, with blurred characters, except for the words "Kao Zhi Zheng Shi" and "December of the Thirteenth Year of the Zhiyuan Period."
